Natural cosmetics are currently so popular that every second beauty brand has them in their offer. New ones spring up like mushrooms. Sadly, there are plenty of myths going around about them, and some often hurtful or even absurd. Knowing the truth is certainly helpful when you try to find the proper beauty routine and the perfect natural cosmetics.
6 myths about natural cosmetics
1. Cosmetics from the pharmacy are safer and more effective than the natural ones
FALSE. Cosmetics sold at the pharmacy are believed to be safer than natural cosmetics because are recommended by dermatologists and pharmacists so we think that it is backed up by medical knowledge and experience. That is not the case, because nowadays pharmaceutical can be called every other cosmetic and the definition of those products does not present a clear picture of what can and what can’t be pharmaceutical. Pharmacies have all sorts of products in their offer and not all of them are good cosmetics.

All beauty products, the natural ones and not, have to meet certain requirements as to the use, action, and safety. The direct impact on it has effective norms regulating the functioning of the cosmetic industry. Obviously, some people are involved in homemade cosmetics manufacturing and do it as a hobby. However, until cosmetics go through all the necessary tests those cannot be released for sale and are not accounted for as cosmetic products.
2. Natural cosmetics are made by professionals
FALSE. The fact is many cosmetics are made at home, on the kitchen table, but in order for them to gain cosmetic status, they need to go through numerous tests that we mentioned before. What is more, even homemade cosmetics are usually made in the rooms that were specially adjusted to cosmetic manufacturing. The production must take place with the preservation of sanitary requirements.
On top of it, made cosmetic is stored in certain conditions and must go through strict safety protocols. People who produce natural cosmetics must obtain the necessary approvals for sale. There’s no compromise, the same rules apply to the drugstore and natural products.
3. Natural cosmetics are not as durable as the drugstore cosmetics
FALSE. Natural cosmetics containing gentle preservatives have set expiry dates. The date may be shorter than in drugstore cosmetics, but it does not differ that much from the general norms. Only some products may have a shorter expiry date and often have certain storage requirements (e.g. keeping them in the fridge).
4. Natural cosmetics don’t contain preservatives
FALSE. All water-based cosmetics contain preservatives. It doesn’t apply to only a small group of natural cosmetics, so-called fresh cosmetics. Remember that natural cosmetics based on the water will always have preservatives in the composition because it ensures their durability and makes sure that cosmetic is suitable for use for longer. It is worth knowing that preservatives in natural cosmetics are way gentler than in regular cosmetics.
5. Natural cosmetics don’t cause allergy
FALSE. Only cosmetics for sensitive skin that were tested for atopy and other afflictions don’t cause allergy. You shouldn’t associate natural cosmetics with hypoallergenic ones. The natural cosmetics may contain potentially allergy-triggering substances. These usually plant extracts and beeswax.
6. Natural cosmetics are expensive
FALSE. More and more natural cosmetics have prices close to drugstore cosmetics prices. Natural cosmetics are usually also much more efficient so the price may be fair or even lower than ‘regular’ cosmetics. Sometimes it is even worth paying a bit more for truly perfect ingredients than to choose one full of parabens and other harmful components.
